Call for Papers

This is a wonderful opportunity to tell the world about the unique and influential activities happening in East Asia and Oceania Region that may not be easily known outside or inside the region. CACM is a magazine with articles that present an overview and impact of a broader topic, leading interested readers to more detailed articles and sources present elsewhere.

  1. CS research highlights: important CS research undertaken by East Asia and Oceania groups in the past 5 years or so. Research with high academic or societal impact — either actual or potential — will be natural candidates. Articles with a theme that has special relevance are likely to be more suitable than those presenting narrow research results. Descriptions of prestigious and traditional regional conferences, schools, and other research related activities.
  2. Computing as a tool for scientific research: innovations and research results about the use of computing as a tool in the sciences and humanities.
  3. East Asia and Oceania region education and service industry: Significant East Asia and Oceania efforts related to services, and important education efforts with interesting computing aspects. What innovative practices or challenges exist?
  4. Startups and unicorns: startups and unicorns in East Asia and Oceania, opportunities and challenges.
  5. Societal impact using technology: East Asia and Oceania region is home to a large number of societal challenges in all areas: health, education, housing, poverty, etc. Examples of making a significant impact on the society through the use of computing should be of interest to the global audience.
  6. Government and digital technology: East Asia and Oceania region have seen a number of experiments in the use of computing technologies are used by the government, and in the way the population is empowered. Experiences and learning from these efforts will be ideal to be featured in the East Asia and Oceania region section.
  7. Banking and financial systems: Important financial institutions operate in East Asia and Oceania region, and large groups of consumers operate within them. Description of innovative projects with interesting computing aspects are welcomed.
  8. Other topics: Anything else about computing in East Asia and Oceania region that could be relevant to the CACM audience, and not covered above, such as emerging technologies, sustainable development, climate changes and energy.

Submission Guidelines

We invite ideas for articles along the above themes from individuals or groups involved with them or who know them closely. If you think you can contribute to this effort, please prepare a short 1-page abstract on your topic along with pointers to sources that can provide more details. The abstract should explicitly highlight the impact and importance of the work in the broad East Asia and Oceania, academic, or societal context. The abstract should clearly mention the name, affiliation and contact information of the contact authors and other potential co-authors. The abstract should also mention the theme (see seven themes listed above) about which you are submitting the article. If a full version is already written (on which the submission will be based), it can be submitted together with the abstract.

Please submit your abstract as a single PDF file through the Regional Special Issue Portal on or before Oct 10, 2022. Your abstract will be reviewed by a team of experts, who will take the final decision by Oct 20, 2022, on the articles to feature in the East Asia and Oceania region Special Section of CACM. Also at least one author of each accepted proposal is required to give a presentation on Oct 28, 2022 (Online).

Based on the submissions, we will first select topic proposals (by or before Oct 20, 2022), which need to and then use the workshop on Oct 28, 2022 to identify tentative authors to be further invited to prepare articles, which will then be reviewed by the review committee and the editorial board of CACM RSS to make the final decision on the articles to feature in the East Asia and Oceania region Special Section of CACM.
